I got my period later than most girls do (at least the girls I know). I was 14 when I got my period, a week before high school started, it was August 28th 2011. I’ve had my period for only six years, but I’ve had my fair share of issues, complications and problems.
The first couple of years I was menstruating I don’t remember having any complications. However, I think that was because I had nothing to compare it to. When I was at the end of grade eleven, and the beginning of grade twelve, I experienced the worst PMS ever. My mom had seen a naturopath previously so I went to her to discuss what was happening and get her opinion on what to do.
Because I was so young my mother or myself didn’t want me to go on the pill (a suggestion from almost anyone in western medicine, and one I don’t agree with unless you are sexually active, and need to protect yourself). I think you should look at the root of the problem before adding more hormones in your already filled hormone body. Anyways, my naturopath recommended that I take Vitex (Chaste Tree) in the form of a tablet. It is considered a herbal treatment. I have been taking it for over three years, and I don’t get any of the PMS symptoms I used to. I have previously forgotten to take it three days in a row, and I can definitely tell a difference. It helps with mood swings, breakouts, and breast sensitivity.
I still get PMS symptoms and they have changed with age. One that happens for like two weeks out of every month is bloating of my entire body. I mean everything my stomach, boobs, and even my face and I feel puffy all over.
Naturally I have high cheekbones, and when my period starts, my body starts to de-bloat. My natural contour line appears again, it’s the strangest thing.
Most girls hate getting their period, but I personally don’t mind it and look at it as a relief. I think for me personally, PMS is worse than the actual bleeding. I only get cramps on the first two days, but they are not that bad, and movement or light exercise and drinking lots of water is the easiest way to get them to go away.
Along with bad PMS symptoms I have trouble getting a consistent period. I have never had a 28 day cycle in my life. I believe my cycle is around 30 to 35 days long. Which I’m not complaining about because it means less periods in a year. However, every three to six months my cycle will be 40 to 56 days and it is torture.
But, whenever my period surprises me, the one thing I can rely on is easy period being there for me!
