Why did I choose this career and any advice to those seeking to be a graphic designer?
I’ve always been a creative person and in high school I knew that I wanted to pursue something in a creative field. Thankfully my parents were supportive and I started looking in to what jobs exist that are also creative. Graphic design offered so much creativity but it felt so different to the “traditional” art I was used to making. I’m a very realistic person even back in high school, so I chose to pursue graphic design (the best of both worlds between art and being able to get a job). My advice for anybody pursuing any creative field is to:
- Make sure you’re passionate about art/design because it is a competitive field (it’s also extremely rewarding which makes up for it) but it isn’t always easy.
- My biggest piece of advice is to try not to compare yourself and focus on your own growth as an artist/designer (I’m still telling myself this piece of advice daily-it’s a learning process for sure).
Favourite kind of project you’ve done so far?
This is really hard to choose because each project I do is so different depending on the client or brief but the one that pops into mind first is an illustration project called “Treasure.” This illustration was created to submit to the Collective Arts contest to have the design produced on their cans. Unfortunately the design didn’t get chosen but I love projects like this where I can experiment with illustration styles and have fun with it.
Favourite spot in Hamilton to create?
This is a close, close call between my bedroom sanctuary (I’m a homebody) or one of the many coffee shops in Hamilton. There is something so much more energizing and productive about creating in a coffee shop so I would have to choose the Starbucks closest to my house or Mulberry!
What is your dream project?
I love talking about dream project! My all-time lifelong dream project is to illustrate and publish my own children’s book. I have always appreciated children’s book illustrations as inspiration and I think my lighthearted style could definitely fit into a cute and charming book. My second dream project is something that I always thing would be a great experience which is to paint a huge mural somewhere in Hamilton. I think this is such a fun and exciting way to get your art out there I just have no idea how this can become a real thing. All I’m saying is keep your eyes peeled for more of my art and design around Hamilton!
