I discovered Yen and her vintage fashion business, Shop The Edit on Instagram last year. I’m happy to say I have made a few purchases from her for me and my mom! She runs an Etsy shop filled with her vintage finds. However, if you live in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area you can make an appointment to visit her studio (see photo below) and shop in person instead, which is way more fun!
I’m Jentine (Yen). I’ve lived in Hamilton most of my life and I’m proud to run my business from this city. I have a husband, a baby girl, a kitty cat and a big closet.
What is The Edit and Why did you start it?
The Edit is an online vintage boutique. I have a lovely studio space where local people can shop or pick up their purchases and I ship stuff worldwide using Etsy as my selling platform. I started out by having a small store on Ottawa St, I then moved to a bigger store on the same street, burned out and then found my balance by having a studio. I started it because I love vintage clothes and I want to encourage people to not be intimidated by vintage but to embrace it and wear it in a modern, chic way.
Why do you love vintage fashion?
I love vintage fashion because the quality is better, the designs are unique and yet, I think that almost every piece of vintage can be re-interpreted into a modern way.
What are some thrifting/vintage tips you have?
My best tip is to buy clothes from me? Haha… But seriously, I would say that when thrifting or buying vintage, look for quality… good natural fibres (wool, leather…), well sewn hems and insides of clothing that are as nicely finished as the outside. Once you can spot a quality piece it becomes second nature and you can start building an upgraded wardrobe.
Do you think vintage fashion is better than the clothing being produced today?
Without a doubt vintage clothing is better quality. I mean you can obviously find beautiful modern clothes but most average mall brands have a very short life span. Even very average brands from the early 90’s hold up to wash and wear way better than the fast fashion at h&m and Forever 21 (not that I have never bought stuff there! I’m just pretty selective now… if I buy fast fashion, I get a piece that I know will last and I will like longer than one season).
What is your all-time favourite vintage piece that you’ve found?
I have so many! Haha… it doesn’t bug me to have vintage clothes in my closet that I haven’t worn in a while. I know one day the perfect occasion will come. I have lots of really great pieces but, I have to say my fur trimmed velvet blazer from Victor Costa is pretty amazing, I can hardly buckle a seat belt around it. I love it.
