I discovered Hutchison, a clothing company based out of Hamilton, Ontario (originally Montreal) via Instagram. Everything is produced in small batches as Sofia, the founder is part of the slow fashion movement.
Introduction! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is a fact about you that would surprise others?
“Well, I’m a new mom. So that’s a pretty encompassing aspect of my life right now. I moved to Hamilton in July 2016, and brought Hutchison along with me. I was born and raised in Montreal, and am still quite connected to the city there, but have been discovering Hamilton more and more over the past year.”
What inspired you to create Hutchison?
“I had been working with a large fashion house in Montreal on the design team for a number of years. What I was doing didn’t line up with my ethics in terms of environmentalism/ production methods and internal politics. I wanted to create something in line with my views on what fashion should and could be. Hutchison gave me a chance to redirect.”
What is your favourite Hutchison item?
“I’m currently in love with the Isla dress from our new spring 2018 line. It’s the first time we’ve decided to work with linen at Hutchison. I am excited to see the response from our customers.”
Where do you find inspiration when creating a new design?
“Hutchison is really about comfort, so it starts there. I find inspiration around me and within. I listen to people talk about what they want to wear and select fabrics carefully and then tailer designs to how the fabric falls or stretches. I’m not sure I’m entirely aware of where all the inspiration comes from, but this might give an idea.”
Your line is Made in Montreal. Why is that important to you and Hutchison’s values?
“Hutchison was founded in 2015 in Montreal, which is where I’m from. It was and still is important to keep production locally made. When I moved to Hamilton in the summer of 2016, I had already established my team in Montreal and wanted to continue working with them. One of my key team members has recently relocated out of Montreal, so I’m starting to rethink aspects of my production and am considering some other local alternatives both in Montreal and the Hamilton/GTA. It is important for me to support local business, and create a quality made in Canada product.”
How are you planning on growing Hutchison?
“I would like to focus attention to creating a stronger online presence. I’ve spent the last few years concentrating on wholesale relationships; the next step is to create a stronger relationship with our direct customers. Long term, I would love to have my own studio boutique. That’s down the road.”
What advice would you like to give to today’s women?
“Ladies, be confident. Work hard, but take time to have fun. Self-care should be part of your daily routine. Create long lasting relationships by listening to others and try to be supportive. It is okay to ask others for help. It’s not always easy, but be honest with yourself when you need a hand.”
We welcome you to share your thoughts about Hutchison and if you already own anything in the comments below. We would love to start a conversation with you!
