“I graduated from the Aesthetics program at Mohawk College in 2003 and have been working hard as an aesthetician ever since. I started my own home-based aesthetics business in 2004. Since then, I have won 17 readers’ choice awards, a 40 under 40 award and was also selected for a the 2016 Alumni of Distinction Award from Mohawk College in the Entrepreneur category. I launched R Devine Skin Care in 2015.”
Why did you start a skincare line?
“The short version of the long story starts when my kids were born. I wanted to use more natural products on both them and myself. After my son was born, I had started following a few pages on Facebook that talked about the nasty chemicals that go into skin care. Having worked with so many lines that contained these toxic ingredients, I really wanted to seek a better line to use within my business and on my family.”
“Back in 2011, I was trying to find a more natural line to use on my clients, which I was having difficulty with. Since I was having a hard time finding a line, I collaborated with a laboratory to help formulate the line for me. About two years after launching this line is when I started following the Facebook Pages that I just mentioned.”
“As I was beginning to research and learn about these ingredients, I was realizing that some of these ingredients were in my so-called “natural” line (according to the laboratory). At this point, I approached the lab and told them that they need to re-formulate. The owner told me that I was doing too much research and that the line was as natural as it could get. I didn’t believe this and kept fighting for a reformulation. Eventually, the laboratory stopped answering my calls and responding to my emails, so I discontinued this line.”
“Shortly after this, I discovered a new holistic line that changed the way I thought about skincare. I started using that line on my clients but, quite a few clients didn’t like scent. I continued trying to find holistic lines from the USA and within Canada, but I couldn’t find anything that worked for me or that was completely natural. My husband made a joke one day and said that I had done enough research that I should start my own skin care line. Little did he know that I would take him seriously. A week later, I signed up for an online course in holistic skin care, and then followed that with another course in organic skincare formulations. It took me about two years to fully formulate the line, R Devine.”
Why is it important to use natural and organic ingredients in your products?
“First and foremost, natural skin care is so important for our health. Synthetics are being researched more and more and are being discovered as carcinogens and hormone disrupters. These same ingredients are in our processed foods. Our bodies recognize ingredients from nature, and take the nutrients that it needs from them. However, with processed foods, there are so many synthetics that our bodies do not recognize, so our immune system targets those rather than using them as nutrients. This can create abnormal cells in the body, leading to disease. Your skin is the exact same. Synthetic ingredients leads to skin conditions, such as acne, rosacea and dermatitis. Just like your internal body, your skin needs ingredients from nature in order to function properly.
Another important thing about holistic skin care is that it takes an internal AND external approach. Your skin is a direct reflection to what is going on inside of your body. Eating a balanced diet must go along side of external care. External care alone will not clear troubled skin. Unfortunately, contrary to what the beauty industry tells all of us, there are no magic products out there.”
Where do you find inspiration for new product creations?
“I listen to my clients’ and customers’ needs. For the first year that I launched R Devine, my clients wanted products for hyperpigmentation, which are often caused by sun damage. I began to broaden my research and was determined to create some products to fill this void in my line. After reading through herbalology books and researching online, I launched two really effective products for hyperpigmentation.
When I formulate new products, I research, play around with formulations and test those one myself. Once I am confident in them, I test them on my willing human friends and clients, tweak and reformulate until the formulations are effective for the majority of my testers.”
How do you discover new product ingredients?
“I discover new product ingredients through a lot of research. I take several months to formulate new products. My schooling also really helped with learning more in depth about ingredients. I consistently read books and am always looking things up online. However, now that I’ve been formulating for a while, I don’t have to do as much research as I used to in the beginning.”
How can we incorporate our skincare routine into of daily self-care routine?
“Most brands carry too many products and are extremely overwhelming for people. These lines will encourage people to purchase 9 or 10 products for their daily routines, and really, who has time or money for that today? When a client needs this many products, washing your face becomes a tedious chore. I wanted to create an experience where women would look forward to taking care of themselves at the beginning and end of each day- washing your face and taking care of yourself using as few products as possible that are effective. I also find that focusing on the scents of my products helps this time be even more of an enjoyable experience.”
“When we take care of ourselves we look and feel better about ourselves. Having kids, I always put more focus on them and put myself on the back burner for awhile. As they get older, I take more time out for myself to recharge to do something for me. Doing this has drastically improved my life; my self-esteem, my patience. My self-care has truly changed my life and I want all women to experience that. I want every woman to feel happy and confident with herself. I feel that the self-care rituals that I have created in my skin care line really help with this.”
What products would you recommend using every morning and night?
“This really depends on your particular skin type or condition. My line treats the skin a lot differently from conventional products. It’s really important to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oil because this causes the skin to overproduce oil in order to compensate. Our skin needs oil in order to function properly. I recommend using oil on all skin types, even on severely oily, acne-prone skin. This is opposite to traditional skincare and is a holistic concept, but it’s so much more effective. Jojoba, hazelnut and hemp oil all closely mimic our skins natural oils. They trick the skin into thinking it has enough oil in turn, balancing your own oil production.”
“The facial oils in the R Devine line have a mixture of different oils in them depending on what your skin needs. The skin needs certain vitamins and nutrients in order to function properly, so I took all of this into consideration when formulating each product. My products are almost like multivitamins for your skin. Depending on your skin type, your skin needs different vitamins, nutrients and essential fatty acids. Feeding your skins needs is important in order to have healthy, radiantly glowing skin.”

R Devine Skincare Products Review | Oily + Acne Prone Sample Pack
First, the Sacred Garden Organic Makeup Remover removes makeup and excess oil well. Using oil on oily skin feels uncomfortable at first but, your skin feels clean after removing the oil with a warm cloth. Second, Sacred Earth Botanical Cleansing Clay was the product I was most excited to try! It smells amazing and makes a great weekly mask. Next, Sacred Botanicals Hibiscus Facial Exfoliant is my favourite product so far. It’s not a harsh exfoliant so I use it every other day. The Hibiscus Facial Exfoliant also smells amazing, as does everything!
After I tried the exfoliant I used the Sacred Balance Purifying Facial Serum. It is nourishing and absorbs quickly into my skin, leaving it smooth and not oily. Lastly for the face products, I used the Bright Soul Hydrating Eye Serum. The serum is hydrating but, I only use it at night because it takes longer to absorb. I wear concealer and it feels weird to apply concealer over slippery skin. The Devine Radiance Moisturizing Body Oil is a soothing blend of oils that has been hydrating my skin. It has been extremely helpful as the weather has gotten colder.
