We all need to take a day for ourselves to rest and prepare for life that happens every day. I choose Sunday’s for self-care because it is the start of the week and what’s a better way to start the week than taking some time relax and take care of yourself. Some of my self-care rituals include getting enough sleep the night before, eating healthy, moving around and taking a day away from social media and my phone.
Let’s start off at the beginning, the digital detox. Taking a day to be away from phone and most importantly social media which is a great thing but, can take a toll on everyone’s self-esteem sometimes. If you really need to post on social media I recommend scheduling posts to go up the day before on a content manager like Hootsuite.
Once you have made peace with being social media free for the day I usually leave my house and get some fresh air. Nothing is more inspiring than leaving your room and exploring your neighbourhood and city. Sunday’s are a great day to meal prep for the week and think about what you’re going to eat to fuel your body. I love going to the Hamilton Farmers Market to get fresh food and interact with the community. I also love getting vegan food at Green Bar on James Street North just 5 minutes away from the market.
After getting all the food I need for the week I come home and start meal prepping. Meal prepping is a great self-care activity because it allows you to focus on you and eating the food that makes you feel great and gives you energy. Some of my go-to meals for breakfast are a banana and yogurt or some oatmeal. I’m not big on eating in the morning but, I know it is the best way to start off your day so I eat something light. Some of my go-to meals for lunch are rice with vegetables or green wraps with tzatziki and veggies. My go-to dinner’s are usually pasta with veggies or chicken with onions and tomatoes (the way my grandma makes them) with broccoli and rice.
After meal prepping while listening to some music I feel like it’s a very good idea to go back out of the house and do something. Some examples of things I love to do that make me happy are working out in the form of dance, yoga, meditation, going on a walk or hike. Grabbing a coffee with a friend and catching up is also a great way to enjoy life an get out of the house. After my last venture out it is time to wind down and get a good night’s sleep. I have always had trouble falling asleep since I was little and one thing that works is starting the night time routine early. I have to shower night it’s always been a thing for me, whether it’s just a body shower or a hair washing day I must shower. After the shower and put on some comfy pajamas and been the relaxation process. This includes my Saje Wellness Diffuser running in the background. I find writing and reading very calming before bed. Reading can make you feel tired and writing allows all of your running and wandering thoughts to be let out on paper. Writing to-do lists or journalling acts as a type of meditation for me.
