There is a lot of talk about natural deodorants and how they ‘don’t work.’ I’m here to break that myth and give you a little background info and what the difference between store bought and natural deodorant.
Deodorant vs Antiperspirant
We really don’t need antiperspirant in our lives. We shouldn’t be trying to stop sweating, it is a fantastic way to let our bodies release toxins naturally. When you use antiperspirant you trap the toxins in or you sweat them out somewhere else. Now the thing in antiperspirants that ‘clog’ your underarm pores so you don’t sweat is aluminum. Read here about what exactly aluminium does to you. From my research aluminum can cause breast cancer so I don’t use antiperspirant, as that statement is self explanatory. Deodorant on the other hand is meant to keep you smelling fresh. So it eliminates or masks the smell of all those toxins being released from your body.
Store Deodorant vs. Natural Deodorant
The majority of store deodorants both, stick and aerosol from brands like, Secret, Lady Speed Stick, Dove, Old Spice etc. have aluminum in them and is marketed as an antiperspirant. Natural formulas contain a base like coconut oil, a powder such as arrowroot or baking soda and some essential oil for scent. You can find natural deodorants at the store, from local makers or you could make it yourself. Natural deodorant can also be in a spray form or you can purchase the crystal stick, more on that below. Another great innovation on the natural deodorant formula is adding charcoal to the formula for extra detoxification. I know that sounds amazing, thank founder of kaia naturals, Mary Futher.
Different Types of Natural Deodorants:
- Cream Form – sometimes called a paste, is stored in a glass jar and applied with your fingertips (The Sage Soap Company Natural Deodorant, $8.50)
- Stick Form – usually a cream formula in a plastic twist up stick, like you would see at a store (Kaia Naturals Takesumi Detox, $21)
- Spray Form – has a salt base and you just spray it directly onto your underarms (Saje Wellness Crystal Fresh Deodorant, $12)
- Crystal Stick – a crystal that you wet before every use and apply to your underarms (Crystal Body Deodorant Stick, $10)
An alternative to help only with the perspiration you experience and not the scent is Numi by Nudy Patooty. Their undershirts have sweat-secret technology in the underarm that lock in sweat so it can’t show on your clothes. I like to think of it as a protective ‘pit pad’.
Making the Switch – The Four Week Detox Process with kaia naturals
Just like trying to cut something out of you diet to see results, your underarms go through the same process. It will take about 4 weeks to notice any changes and you might even sweat more because your body is finally able to let all the toxins out. Here are kaia naturals guidelines when making the switch and starting their takesumi detox.
Week 1 – You should not experience any odour
Week 2 – You might feel like the deodorant is not working because you might have some odour mid-day. However, that is your body detoxing. You are finally giving it a chance to let the toxins escape.
Week 3 – You may experience an increase in sweating as your body is trying to eliminate more toxins.
Week 4 – Your body should have eliminated any built up toxins and you should have minimal odour and sweating .
My Results and Experience
I started my takesumi detox in June 2017 and I am still using natural deodorants 10 months later. I used the charcoal based takesumi detox deodorant from kaia naturals for the whole month of June. I choose to detox during the summer because I was naturally sweating more and I wanted to see if the deodorant could handle it. My first week was great. The product smells very fresh and it apply clear to the skin even though it is black from the charcoal. My second and third week I did experience the extra sweating and odour. If I was able to, I would reapply once throughout the day and if I was doing something at night, after work I would clean my underarms and apply the deodorant again. The last week I had a little of odour but, not a lot of sweating.
Some of the benefits I’ve experienced my doing the takesumi detox are: lighter underarms, less odour, less toxins and less sweating. I find now that the only time I have an issue with smell is if it’s stress sweat. After working out or walking fast I have no issues with smell. However, if I’m stressing about school or work or being late for the train, the smell is worse. I don’t think anything can help with that but, kaia naturals definitely works the best.
I rotate between three deodorants, kaia naturals takesumi detox, Saje Wellness Crystal Fresh Deodorant and The Sage Soap Company Natural Cream Deodorant. I also just recently started using the kaia naturals detox booster bar to help my body eliminate more toxins and any odour.
