Introduction! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m Jess, the Creative Director at J. Avolio—a boutique design studio in #HamOnt with a knack for branding creatives & entrepreneurs. We specialize in thoughtfully curated brand identities, with fresh, elevated and well-strategized designs.
How did you find the world of entrepreneurship and freelancing with J. Avolio?
I spent many years working for other agencies and working towards their dreams/visions, which often meant neglecting my own success and not being able to display the body of work I created because of how agencies operate. I decided to finally take the leap out on my own and I honestly can’t imagine it any other way. I’m able to create on my own terms and work with people and businesses I feel passionate about.
What advice would you like to give to today’s women?
Things don’t always happen right away. Sometimes it will take a decade of working towards your vision before you have the right skills and expertise to excel in what you do. But sometimes you also have to take that leap and also ask for what you want, even if you’re uncertain…because yes, it’s scary as hell, but it’s better than always wondering “what if?” Also, if something isn’t a “Hell, yes,” then it’s a “No.”
How would define the word success?
It’s kind of an abstract term that exists in a grey area. I don’t even know if I would even refer to myself as “successful” but maybe others would see me running my own business or see the projects I get to work on and think I am. I’m honestly just happy I get to do something I enjoy doing (and also on my own terms, haha). But that’s not “success” to everyone and not even necessarily to myself because the word doesn’t really hold significance to me. From my perspective, don’t think it should be tied to titles, money, status, or popularity, and you should just judge it by your own personal metrics.
What do you love most about being apart of the Hamilton Community?
It’s just a really chill place to live where people seem really encouraging of the entrepreneurial spirit. I like that every week there is seemingly a new cafe, restaurant, shop, etc. — just people making their own way in life.
Favourite Place in Hamilton?
Oh, dang. Probably my apartment because it’s cute as heck and feels super homey to me. Otherwise, my go-to cafe is Mulberry.
