I discovered FRANC, (an ethical fashion basics company) on Instagram a few months ago and loved the pieces instantly. I’m always looking for new ethical Canadian apparel brands, especially ones that create clothing you can wear everyday.
My name is Brandy, I am the owner and designer of FRANC. Also, mother, wife, friend and yogi but those hats really don’t shine as much on my resume. I am a fashion designer by trade and have spent the last 13 years working with Canadian brands both big and small – until launching FRANC last April.
What inspired you to create FRANC?
Owning my own clothing line was a dream that started when I was a teenager. Over the years as I shopped (and worked for other brands), I realized there were things I was constantly spending way too much time hunting down: basics that were timeless, classic but not boring. Which inspired me to take my teenage dream of owning a clothing line and file it away as an embarrassing memory (the details never to be spoken of again) – so I could focus all my skills into what is now FRANC.
What are your favourite ethical fashion basics from FRANC?
Where do you find inspiration when designing new items?
From real life, talking with people about what they love and listening to customers feedback. I am forever trying to fill the not so obvious holes that are actually quite common in our closets.
What is the good cause that you promote and support through your brand?
We support ethical manufacturing. Which to us means treating the people who spend their days crafting our clothes the way we ourselves want to be treated at work. Basically, our cause is to treat people the way you want to be treated.
How are you planning on growing FRANC and continuing to be a part of the ethical fashion movement?
Currently, we source our fabrics from a third party supplier who sources fabric from international and local sources but, our goal is to slowly move our fabric to be 100% knit and dyed (exclusively for us) in Canada. Taking ethical manufacturing even further and keeping our entire production 100% in Canada. The minimums for this are very high, so it is a hard goal to attain but as we grow it gets closer and closer to grasp.
What advice would you like to give to today’s women?
When it comes to style: Trust your gut, if it doesn’t feel right it’s probably not. The best style is built on confidence. So most importantly you need to feel good in what you wear – regardless of colours and trends. When it comes to life: Don’t always believe everything your gut tells you. Many of the best things are sitting on the other side of something that feels out of your comfort zone.
