Introduction! Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I have always been a designer at heart, my mom and grandmother taught me how to make clothes for my barbies and I became obsessed with clothing at a young age. After finishing my degree at Ryerson I started working in the industry right away. It has been such a good experience dealing with both overseas and domestic production. I feel my years of experience has given me amazing building blocks to build my brand.
What inspired you to create Ecolove?
I always planned to create my own line and was given the perfect opportunity. Last year I was let go from my position due to the company moving its design office out of province. I reflected on my years in the industry and decided I wanted to create something meaningful that would make people feel good and do no harm. Ecolove was born❤
What is your favourite Ecolove item?
My new favourite in my 3 in 1 cowl top, bamboo is a new fabric for me as I have focused mainly on hemp/organic cotton blends. The bamboo has a dressier feel and I love that it is a more fitted style but still flatters most body types.
Where do you find inspiration when designing new items?
I am always watching for great details, shapes and colours that I combine to make my next design. The inspiration can come from something as simple as a small detail I saw on a tv and my mind thinks that is the perfect details to finish the top I was working on. Sometimes playing with fabric on my Judy let’s me find a new idea. I might see a gorgeous painting that inspires my colour choices for the season. The bits of inspiration always come from unexpected places and combined makes fun new designs.
What is the good cause that you promote and support through your brand?
Currently I don’t have a cause that I promote, as the company grows I would love to add a portion of profits to go towards a cause such as 1% for the planet.
How are you planning on growing Ecolove and continuing to be a part of the sustainable fashion movement?
I am always looking for new ways to reduce waste and research new materials that are eco-friendly. I use certified fabrics to make sure that the environment and its people are not harmed in the fabric production. My packaging is compostable and/or made of 100% recycled materials. I use scrap fabric for hang tag ties and embroidery patches. I hand dye each garment with low water techniques and use low impact dyes. As the company grows I would love to explore direct to garment printing and find new ways to use our fabric scraps.
