East Uptown Yoga located on Concession Street is a non-heated Yoga Studio for every one!
Since my early 20s, I have been interested in living a life in health. My mom was my role model and believed it was important to exercise every day and eat more whole foods. She walked a lot and exercised at home on the living room floor and I would copy her. When I was a school teacher, I would go to the gym very early in the morning before school. I was always interested in yoga, since it had been around for a few thousand years, so when a teacher friend invited me to go one day, I did, and never stopped. I developed a dedicated practice and still also enjoy regularly walking and biking. My daughter Annie began her practice shortly after me. We eventually went to several teacher trainings. It was Annie’s boyfriend Braden who observed that we often discussed yoga. One day, about 18 months ago, he said, “I’m wondering why you don’t open your own studio?” We couldn’t think of a reason why, so by the next week, we were looking for a space. It was that simple!
How did you find the world of entrepreneurship? / Why did you start your yoga studio?
We moved into the Concession street area a couple of years ago. Annie and I are all about supporting, local and small business. We avoid big box stores as much as possible and prefer to shop where we can get to know and build a relationship with local merchants and their employees. Meeting many of your needs in your own community is appealing. We wanted to create a welcoming space as part of that community, where people could learn and practise yoga, and connect to others.
How would you define the word success?
Setting and achieving goals, and enjoying the process. Waking up in the morning and feeling excited and happy about what you do.
What advice would you like to give to today’s women?
Support and build each other up. Learn from one another. Love yourself. Practise yoga!
What do you love most about being apart of the Hamilton Community?
Hamilton’s growth is very exciting. I love the pride that Hamiltonians take in their city.
Favourite Place in Hamilton?
That’s a tough one since I love moving all over Hamilton, but if I had to choose one, I would say Sam Lawrence Park and all along the escarpment multi use path up to Mohawk Road. It’s a very friendly place lots of people walking and biking. The view is lovely day and night!
