Why did I choose this career and any advice to those seeking to be an illustrator/graphic designer?
From a young age, I loved watching branding, illustrations and graphics processes and designs but never did it myself. My mother is a web designer, I was lucky to have exposure to the industry because of her. I never thought art was my thing, I can’t paint or draw on paper. It wasn’t until I turned 26 is when I actually picked up my iPad and bought an apple pencil and just went at it, I started to become more creative and in-depth with myself. Ultimately, my fiancé, Nathan was the one to push to start doing commissions and custom designs. My advice to anyone trying to get into the business, is TRY! Try, try and try, I always labelled myself as not an “artisty” person, when really art is just how we express ourselves. It was the best outlet of expression; that I needed mentally and emotionally.
Favourite kind of project you have done so far for Burdy Co?
I would say my art have really grown in the last couple of months. My favourite kind of project would be using my photography skills, taking pictures and then recreating those pictures as line art works. Turning busy photographs into minimalist art pieces. I like simple, it’s the of my art values.
Favourite spot in Hamilton to create?
The list is endless: mulberry house!
What is your dream project?
I really want to paint a mural on a brick wall of an old industrialized building. Something about Dofasco and Steelco that really remind me of Hamilton and would love to incorporate two of Hamilton greatest attraction; being steel town and the art community.
