Have you noticed the uprising of yoga studios in Hamilton? I feel like there has been like 20 new yoga studios popping-up around the city in the last couple of years. It’s not a bad thing because yoga is one of the best ways to get your daily movement. However, the standard price for a one hour class is $15. For some individuals that is not a high price but, for me it is because I’m a student. It also can add up over the course of a year. If you are dedicated to practicing every week it can cost you up to $700 a year or more. Good thing Hamilton has some great people bring accessible wellness to the city!
Accessible Wellness Offerings
Having to pay for school myself and living on a student budget, I always look for ways to get things at a cheaper price. In the summer I discovered Robin Lamar on Instagram, and the company she co-founded Ritual Island, which has accessible wellness, health and movement offerings. Robin is a yoga and pilates teacher who pop-ups around Hamilton to teach Pay What You Can (PWYC) classes and other series of classes. PWYC classes usually mean $5 a class or a donation to a food bank or a charitable organization.
Another way studios in Hamilton are making yoga classes accessible to everyone is by offering community classes based on donation. Some studios that offer community classes are In Fine Feather and East Uptown Yoga.
Accessible Community Wellness Centres
Inland Island is a located on 446 King Street West in Hamilton and was founded by Dr. Emily Bennett. They are a community-based wellness centre offering safe & effective natural and traditional health care services. Their intent is to improve access to preventative and holistic medicines by decreasing financial, physical, and social barriers to care. Inland Island wants to contribute to Hamilton by filling a gap in holistic healing services, connecting people through community-based health care, and bringing new learning and sharing opportunities through classes, workshops, & other events.
